Nott rings the right note

Each year Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages(r) and White Pages(r), recognises the contribution of local residents in the community by featuring them on the cover of its books.

The theme for this year’s covers, Australians Creating a Better Future, recognises people throughout Australia who have made a positive contribution to their community through projects or initiatives that help to make a better future.

These projects have contributed environmentally, economically and/or socially to the local community and will benefit the next generation of Australians.

Dr Nott’s selection recognises his commitment in helping establish Clean Energy for Eternity (CEFE), an initiative to educate locals about climate change.

“I’m pretty chuffed that I was chosen for the front page and it’s recognition for what we have been doing with Clean Energy for Eternity, which is working successfully with the community in relation to climate change,” Dr Nott said.

“We had some good news lately after the Bega Valley was named the 9th highest ownership of solar photovoltaic cells by post code in Australia.

“Towns like Tathra and Bermagui lead the way in that area, they are well above the average for the shire. I think it’s really fitting that Tathra is pictured in the front page photo.”

Balancing the demands of his day job as an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Nott hopes to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption in the Bega Valley Shire, with 50 per cent of energy to be produced from renewable sources by 2020. To date, five local shires have committed to the ‘50/50 by 2020’ target.

“It is something the shire has embraced and our goal has received good support from council. The community is keen to meet those targets and as time goes on they look more and more achievable,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr Nott helped drive the largest solar panel bulk buy in south-east NSW. In 2007 he organised fund raising events to finance his ‘Life Saving Energy’ initiative that has seen all seven local surf clubs in the region fitted with renewable energy devices. The ongoing campaign is now looking at getting rural fire stations set up with renewable energy.

There are many different ways of searching to get more local results. I used the example 'Indian restaurants' in a previous article to show how the different local searching methods yielded different numbers of competing websites . One method is to use a location qualifier, such as 'Adelaide,' as part of your search query. Here is a table with the top three location qualifiers for Adelaide:

General consensus is that we use qualifying words such as 'Adelaide', 'South Australia', or a suburb name when searching. We find this much more useful than Yellow Pages searches. We've found Yellow Pages results to be unhelpful, and the results listed in an undesirable manner (based on age of listing, as opposed to relevancy).

Although personally I search for "Adelaide" when performing a local search, I also quite regularly use the suburb for example "Aborist Magill". Based on analytics data from a cross section of clients, I find that South Australia or SA is searched almost as often as Adelaide, but it also depends on the type of industry and the reach of their services. Local business is generally Adelaide, rural or state/nationwide is quite often the state.
