When she’s not standing on her head …

Vanessa Noelte, 17, is a junior at Seekonk High School. She’s an Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field athlete, Key Club President, on the Student Executive Council, the Peer Helping Network (PHN), formed the Nutrition Committee, is a high school Tutor, National Honor Society member, Spanish Honor Society member, First Aid Club member, and she’s on the Spanish Club.

You’d think that would be enough to keep her busy. It is not. When she’s not involved in her many hobbies – such as yoga, biking, basketball, and nutrition (organic foods) – she’s making the world a better place. Soon she will ride 150 miles on her bike to raise money for MS research.

Describe an average day in the life of Vanessa Noelte.

“Attend school, Track and Field training/meets, studying for Honors and AP classes, spend time with

family and friends – and eat and sleep somewhere in there.”

How long have you done yoga? Why do you think it’s so popular now?

”Five years. Since seventh grade. I plan to take a yoga teaching course this summer and work part-time as a yoga teacher. The reason yoga is so popular is something I recently researched. I wrote a paper on Baron Baptiste. Baron “Americanized” yoga by combining the traditional meditative aspects of yoga with strenuous exercise creating a new form of yoga called power yoga. This form of yoga appeals to Americans because it offers the benefits of relaxation and exercise in the same hour. Exercise is difficult to fit into our busy schedules so both a stress reliever and cardio workout combined has become very popular. Athletes have turned to yoga to improve performance and prevent injury by becoming stronger and more flexible. A lot of members of the track team started to take up yoga. Its also fun. Where else do you get to perfect your headstand or other cool/odd positions? You feel accomplished and relieved after class. Makes your whole body feel great. It gets addicting.”

How long have you been a long-distance cyclist? How is that challenge different than yoga?

“Started as a little girl going down the bike path with my parents on a bright pink bike with tassels. Now I am all grown up and ride ahead of my parents down the bike path in my new road bike. I have enjoyed long rides with my family since eighth grade. As I entered high school, my sister and I have passed our parents and now go on distance rides by ourselves. Biking is different from yoga in that biking is all self motivation. You need to get ready, get on your bike and push yourself far distances or high heights over hills. A yoga teacher takes each yogi through the poses so yoga is not something you think about doing, you just go into the next pose. You do not give yourself the option of slowing down or stopping because you are just flowing. Both are equally as physically difficult.
