Windjammer Days starts Tuesday

Windjammer Committee Co-Chair and Boothbay Harbor resident Susan Clough says of the event, “This year’s Windjammer Festival is going to be sensational! We hope you’ll be able to join the vibrant Boothbay Region community in celebrating its maritime history and the magic of windjammers with two days of street and boat parades, music, Maine's famous culinary delights, programs and activities for all ages, and a spectacular fireworks finale over the harbor." The festival celebrates a time when sailing ships were the best way to travel the world or transport goods long distances. Windjammers were the grandest of the merchant ships from the era, enormous sailing boats with several large masts designed to carry massive loads of cargo from one continent to another. For centuries, the Boothbay Harbor Region was a center of American shipping and shipbuilding, its harbor graced by elegant Windjammers as well as other commercial and pleasure ships.
