Thai Ice Tea

When you go for Thai food, is ordering Thai tea one of the main draws for you? (In addition to the ever-popular pad thai, of course.) If so, you'll be as pleased as punch (Muay Thai–style) that there's an ice cream version of this thirst-quenching beverage now available in Vancouver.

Sure there are plenty of other interesting Asian ice cream flavours to check out like black sesame (one of my other favourites) or matcha. But I actually let out an audible gasp when I stumbled upon Cremo Thai Tea Natural Fruit Ice Confection in one of the coolers at T&T Supermarket.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the delicious drink, the basic recipe for Thai tea is black tea with sugar and condensed milk. The iced version is served with condensed milk (or other types of milk) poured on top. (Of course, there are numerous variations to the recipe and some include additional or alternate ingredients like star anise, cloves, orange blossoms, coconut milk, and more.) It's a refreshing counterpoint to the hot spices of many Thai dishes that include curries or chilies.

Just for your reference, this is what Thai iced tea looks like if you're never seen it before:

The ice cream version is a pale terra cotta colour, and features a light, somewhat diluted taste of the drink. Like most Asian confections, the sweetness is perfectly subdued and not overdone. At first, I didn't think I'd like the fact that it was sprinkled with black jelly gummies. (What? Some other flavour coming in between me and my beloved Thai iced tea?) But I actually didn't mind them at all. (Kinda reminded me of bubble tea.)

If you've never tried Thai tea before, I recommend trying the drink version, either hot or cold, so you have something to compare the ice cream incarnation to.

The Cremo ice cream is imported from Thailand and on sale at the moment at T&T Supermarket for $3.77 (1 litre). I will warn Thai tea–lovers ahead of time that, yes, it is addictive. (I am ashamed to say that I finished the whole thing in two days. Cripes.)

The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I enjoyed the lunch special for $9.95, which included soup and salad, an entree with rice and a delicious salad roll. The red curry was a good choice and the Thai Ice Tea was the perfect summer refreshment.

They also have sweetly pungent house-made ginger ale made from real ginger. Cap it all off with a sweet dessert like Thai ice cream, coconut or green tea, in a playground of tropical fruits like lychee-like rambutan and jelly bear-like palm seed.

To finish off the dinner, I was delighted to see a scoop of Thai tea ice-cream lightly topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry for dessert. I'm a big fan of finishing off meals that are heavy on spices and intense flavours with ice-cream,
