Welch: Firms offer gaming on the go

Silly me. I thought mobile gaming meant playing games on devices that don’t need to be plugged into the wall.

Apparently, it also means playing games in a high-tech party trailer.

And Amarillo now has two of them ready to entertain you.

GameTruck Amarillo offers a 33.5-foot trailer outfitted with four 55-inch 3-D TVs plus a 47-inch 3-D TV plus a full complement of gaming systems, PlayStation 3, XBox360 and Nintendo Wii, owner Brandon Coats said. The company brings in services for parties, game tournaments, fundraisers, corporate and other events.

Coats said they’re also beta-testing an educational program for fundraisers. When I talked to him Friday, Coats was parked outside the United Supermarket in Canyon for a radio promotion. Find GameTruck at gametruckamarillo.com, or call Coats at 806-677-8305.

Go Big Game Truck is a rentable 32-foot trailer outfitted with PlayStation 3, XBox360 and Wii gaming systems and stadium seating.

“We can accommodate 16 players, about 25 kids or adults can get in the trailer,” employee Delon Moore said. “We do satellite events, Pay-Per-View. We’ll pull it right to your house and, when we’re done, we’ll pull it right off.”

To find out more, visit gobiggametruck.com or call Moore at 806-678-4550 or owner Tammy Frasier at 806-729-3586.

Speaking of mobile, there’s Best Buy Mobile .

Electronics chain Best Buy is rapidly rolling out smaller copies of its big-box stores. A 1,240-square-foot Best Buy Mobile store is expected to open in Westgate Mall in September.

“It’s wireless communications — cellphones, iPads, notebooks and laptops,” mall general manager Brian Giffin said. “What they do is cherry-pick the stuff out of the big store and do a scaled-down version. They’re real aggressive. They say they’re 8 percent of the (electronics market share) and they want to be at 15.”

A space at Center Court, between anchors JCPenney and Bealls is being renovated for the retailer.

Herring Bank has made another step toward establishing its new downtown branch.

The city of Amarillo issued a building permit for Pioneer General Contractors to remodel the former Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel and Funeral Home at Southeast Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street to house the branch. A city report lists the construction value of the project at almost $2 million.
