“They can pick the color and concho and I do the fun stuff and school colors,” Scholwinski said.

She uses saddle conchos as the focal point of the customized shoes and adds details and jewels to build on the personal design of the customer.

Starting with a plain Nomad band nylon flip flop, customers first pick out the color and style of cowhide they want for the strap out of the 45 options Scholwinski has to choose from. She can also use plain leather for the strap and paint it any color a customer wishes.

Next, shoppers can choose one of the numerous saddle conchos that will add that little extra pop to the shoe. From there, there are accents and details to attach to make the flip flop even more personalized.

“So, it’s endless possibilities,” Scholwinski said. “We can even put their kids’ pictures on it or anything that can be printed on photo paper. …Right now, football is real big, so I’m doing a lot of football and school colors.

“That’s the fun part. We get to be creative.”

Shoppers get to choose between flat, one and three-fourths inch and three-inch flip flop heel heights.

Customized, the shoes start at $55 and can go up to $120, Scholwinski said.

Christy Antilley’s husband surprised her with a Texas A&M University themed flip flop last Christmas.

“When you wear your Aggie flip flops, everyone stops to say hello and ask me where I got them,” Anilley said. “Every time I wear them at least one or two people ask.

“It’s something unique and nobody else has them. It’s not something you can find at Academy or Wal-Mart.”

The conchos are also interchangeable.

“It’s not only cool, it’s economical,” Scholwinski said. “Basically, for $90 you can have two pairs of shoes.”

Scholwinski came up with the idea for Flip Flop Bling while setting up shop at craft shows with her sister. Cowhide flip flops became popular and some people started to dress up the straps, but prices climbed up to $300 a pair, she said.
