New Miss Nevada HS, collegiate crowned in Vegas

Some of the Silver State's most accomplished young ladies competed for the Miss Nevada Junior High, High School and Collegiate America Pageant.

Fourteen girls competed for the title inside the Suncoast Casino Showroom Sunday night.

Judges weren't just focusing on looks, though, as they were evaluating the girls also on academic success and their work in the community.

Cameron Dikey, Briana Lowe, and Corey Bradley were the winners.

Proceeds from the pageant benefited Project Teddy , which gives teddy bears to sick children in hospitals throughout Nevada.

Intervention Program for At-Risk Youth Expanded to Address Transition from Middle School to High School

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (AUGUST 2011) — To help increase high school graduation rates in Pinellas County, AT&T* and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) are expanding the BE Great: Graduate program to help rising 8th and 9th graders successfully transition into high school.  The BE GREAT: Graduate program uses established risk factors to identify youth most likely of dropping out of high school and intervene utilizing a mentorship program, with a proven record of success.  To this point, the program has focused on high school students, but with new funding from AT&T, BGCA plans to expand the program to younger participants.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Suncoast is one of eight Clubs across the country to launch the new initiative Be Ready, which will serve a total of 400 youth in the first year.  AT&T has committed a total $1 million to launch the initiative in communities with the highest dropout rates.

“We are grateful for this generous support from AT&T enabling us to expand the reach of our graduation initiative,” said Tammy Hillier, BE GREAT: Graduate Manager for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast.  “We know from research and firsthand experience, that many of the middle school age youth we serve suffer serious challenges making a successful transition into high school.   We believe that every child in America deserves a great future and graduating from high school is an absolute must.”

Through Be Ready, current 8th and 9th graders, identified at being most at risk of dropping out, will receive weekly mentoring from trained youth development professionals and will be provided with individualized academic success plans that include high school graduation and job exploration. Local high schools will be engaged to build a partnership that includes data sharing, such as credit accrual and attendance, so that outcomes can be monitored.

Because, sixty-two percent of high school dropouts do so by the 10th grade, AT&T and BGCA have recognized the need to intervene at an earlier age.  Many students new to high school struggle with making the transition from middle school to high school.  In order to assist with this transition, Be Ready will teach skills such as time management, study skills, note taking, organization and personal responsibility.

“Research shows that the transition from 8th to 9th grade is critical to addressing the dropout rate,” said Andrew Hall, Regional Director, AT&T.  “The Be Ready initiative will provide students with the skills and on- the-ground support they need to enter 9th grade prepared for the new challenges high school brings.
