Hypothyroidism, or thyroid gland, is the second most common disease of the endocrine system, behind diabetes. That said, only about 5 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with the disease.
The thyroid gland is normally located on the front of the neck and below the larynx or "Adam's apple." Thyroid literally means "shield-shaped", describing its shape. It has two lobes that are attached to the front of the neck. The thyroid gland produces hormones containing iodine, mainly T4 and T3. These hormones regulate the activity of the body metabolism.They also affect another hormone - Calcitonin - which controls the use of calcium by the body.
The pituitary gland in the brain learns to make thyroid hormone, more or less depending on the blood levels of thyroid hormones. It is one of many systems of the body reactions. The pituitary produces thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), TSH stimulates the thyroid to make thyroid hormones, thyroid hormone and cut production of pituitary TSH.
If the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough hormones, blood levels of TSH will go up.This is because the pituitary is telling the thyroid to make more hormones, but it does not respond. A high TSH levels in a blood sample to diagnose the disease.
There are many causes for hypothyroidism. The most common is called Hashimoto's thyroiditis and is the result of inflammation of the thyroid gland. Most cases of prolonged thyroid deficiency can cause high levels of blood cholesterol and heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation.
