Avoiding religious civil war – are we up to it?
I thought the recent New York Times front-page piece on the dissimilar views of six new bishops Episcopal York on gay marriage has been surprisingly positive. Thank you God for dialogue and disagreement in the rich instead of a manifesto issued by Vatican-like top.But the reality is that in the United States there is a civil war in Christianity. On one side are the fundamentalists, liberals on the other with suspicion and even hatred growing between them. Moreover, the old phrase "Judeo-Christian" is still bandied about, but much of what we called Zionist Jews is now.Islam remains a mystery in a puzzle largely because the rest of us were exiled to the far hinterland, both refusing to understand or take seriously.
In other words, we are in a time of violent change. What we have chosen to assume can not be taken longer. It is time we recognize the hypocrisy in much of our "ecumenical" and "interfaith" meetings and declarations. What we have done superficially, often out of certain kinds of politeness, is no longer operational if it ever was. Of course, we do not know each other. A big question would be: do we really know ourselves? At times, we seem to be in the theater instead of life, offering performance pseudo, speaking lines written long ago, out of our way to get a standing ovation.
This is precisely where we need to make dramatic changes. We are no longer in the running time of the theater, with one or two acts, a curtain call - please God - full of praise from a full house. I think we really need to dig into the long term. This will require a change of heart and actions has changed. Are we up?
At 88, I graduated in elderhood. I look back on 1950's amazing with their endless contradictions between perception and reality. To me, roaring, sensational, over-the-top of the 60 had roots in the 50's grayer, more methodical and muted. It was a slow process, often disguised accumulation of ideas, feelings and emotions that would end in an explosion.
In 1961, I received an invitation to a Freedom Ride from black and white Episcopalians. I was scared to death. I lacked courage, but learned about it in training at work. Our "pilgrimage of prayer" Freedom Ride Me insider told me, and forever changed me.
Accordingly, later in the 60's, I found myself participating in a Mass for peace within a corridor of the Pentagon. As I recall, I gave the homily. As I have said something about Jesus' parable of the salt has lost its flavor, I was responsible for the arrest involved in a replica anthem "You're under arrest." The charge, very ironically, was "disturbing the peace.
