Deer and fawns take up residence in urban Boystown, now being forced to leave

A mother deer and her two fawns recently  made their home in Boystown . They will now be relocated by Animal Control.

Animal Control had previously said that they would leave the deer alone unless it was noted that they were injured or posing a threat.  However, since humans have regularly fed the animals, they are  now removing the animals so that they will not become further domesticated.

City Animal Care and Control Commissioner Cherie Travis  told The Chicago Sun-Times ,

“We just asked people not to feed them. Unfortunately people did not heed our advice.” 

Signs were put in place around the area but were taken down by residents who had been feeding the animals apples and bottle-feeding the babies with milk from Whole Foods. Residents likely feared after hearing the fawns screaming that they were hungry.

According to Wikipedia, it is not unusual for wild deer to leave their babies during the day.  Fawns release a high-pitched squeal to call out to their mothers who are out foraging for food and only return a few times a day to feed their offspring.

Tim Harrigan, a long-time resident of Boystown said,

"I think people were feeding the babies food because they heard the babies screaming. Now Animal Control is involved and I know they are trying to do the humane thing, but I wish they were just left alone until they got older. "

The annual Gay Pride Parade is scheduled to be held next week and Alderman Tom Tunney stepped into action by raising concerns for the animals' safety during the event. 

According to  NBC Chicago,   Animal Control was notified quickly and have been monitoring the deer ever since getting reports from Lakeview residents, where the animals made their home behind an apartment building.

"It is normal for those of us in Boystown to stick together due to the fact that so many of us living here have been made fun of all of our lives So many of us have always felt out of place. I guess we felt the same way for the babies, like they were out of place, so people started feeding them." Said Harrigan
