Satisfying summer fare at Potomac's Wine Harvest, Olney's Sisters' Sandwiches
Open since November, the sister store to The Wine Harvest in The Kentlands is a cool place to complement a sandwich with a good glass of wine. Wine displays surround 10 tables, seating 54. Large copper balls frame lights above the 10-seat bar with its large-screen TVs. Handsome wood shelves house a wall of wines. New outdoor seating on order will accommodate more patrons, says general manager Andrew Meyrowitz who has worked for and with his father Marty in the business.
A dozen cheese and pate plates, eight salads and 20 sandwiches provide light or more substantial fare. Salmon or mesquite chicken strips can beef up a salad. The best-selling Wine Harvest Salad is my friend's choice, a mix of romaine, goat cheese, walnuts, chopped Granny Smith apples and tomatoes with a balsamic vinaigrette.
The Tuna Melt and Chicken Salad are popular. We try the Turkey Melt with brie and honey mustard glaze and the Mesquite Grilled Chicken with shredded Quebec cheddar and fixings.
Meyrowitz, also beverage manager, changes the wines by the glass every two weeks based on availability and season and tries to balance domestic and imported wines on the menu.
With a large craft beer selection, 75 bottled beers and Guinness, Hoegaarden, Loose Cannon IPA, Crispin Original Cider, Sam Adams Summer Ale and Miller Lite on tap, he encourages everybody to come in and hang out.
"There isn't more bang for your buck than our happy hour," he declares. Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m., five draught beers are $1.99 and the sixth, Miller Lite, is 99 cents. "We do it as a thank-you for our customers."
The store hosts a tasting of Cline wines Tuesday, July 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. Best of all, it's free.
Sisters' Sandwiches
Sisters' Sandwiches & Such, in front of Roots Organic Market, welcomes passersby on Georgia Avenue. It succeeded Penny Chocolate and Artisanal Gelato in historic Higgins Tavern, the restored 1823 wooden structure and 1850 frame house, last year.
The sisters are Tammy Prestipino and Kim Carlson; the "such" refers to repainted salvaged items from road trips over the last five years. The eclectic décor attests to the sisters' "addiction to finding junk and turning it into treasures," as Prestipino puts it.
Space is at a premium inside, with 29 gloriously mismatched seats at tables upstairs and down. Outside there's room for 32 more, with many tables sporting umbrellas.
The menu, some dozen sandwiches and half-dozen salads, pays tribute to friends and relations. "Trish the Dish's Roasted Veggie Sandwich" seems like good summer fare to me. And indeed, it is — red and yellow peppers, eggplant, yellow and green squash and fresh mozzarella slipped into sourdough bread slathered with basil pesto and toasted.
