Real world connections

It's science come to life at Terra Nova National Park.

Home-grown productions and activities are animating home-grown science.

“We work really hard to connect people to the natural world and the work that we're doing,” says aquatic biologist David Cote.

Park interpreters have taken his Dendritic Connectivity Index (DCI) and translated it to stage and film.

Two years ago, Cote was collecting data from fish in the park's rivers and streams.

The bulk of the work was done at a computer, reading data collected by pit transponders and loop antennas and analyzing fish movements throughout the habitat.

Fish need access to different parts of a water system to survive – trout lay their eggs in shallow rapids, spend their early days and weeks in shallow pools, then move to larger ponds as adults. But road blocks like culverts and dams severely hamper their ability to access all parts of their aquatic habitat.

It was all in support of the index, a mathematical equation he and Nova Scotia biologist Dan Kehler developed to determine how fragmented the park's waterways are, and where major hurdles are limiting fish movement.

The interpretation staff at Terra Nova have developed several programs to make the science accessible. They've developed an outdoor theatre piece, a YouTube video, a school program and a fish on wheels.

Public Education Outreach Officer Robin Tulk created a portable model of a steam and culvert crossing.

A remote-controlled car disguised as a fish is teaching kids about the problem of connectivity in our waterways.

Adie Hayes is a Visitor Experience/Interpretation Officer.

“It's really effective in communicating to kids,” she says. “The goal for the kids is to safely get across the culvert,”

The model stream and culvert comes complete with a pit tag and loop antennas – the same equipment Cote and his team use in the field. The fish carries a transponder that emits a signal picked up by antennas below and above the culvert. The signals are recorded on a computer tracking the fish's movements.

“Instead of giving them an abstract idea, we're giving them something we can put their hands on and understand,” says Hayes, adding it is especially gratifying to watch kids in turn explain the culvert challenge to their parents. To make the point, Hayes and Tulk will place stones and other obstacles in the culvert to mimic the real-world challenges fish face in the wild.

I read your all post, the above post just makes me confused. How could you just bash one community , their beliefs ,make fun of their Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him and all the prophets ), his teaching , saying the that Mohamed has fooled his followers , let him , we want to be fools what can you do about it? and then later come up with such a statement. I used to be very involved in all the immigrationvoice.org matters. When I was in a small town in Florida( moved to another city), there were lot of Indians unaware of immigrationvoice.org and immigration issues. I did lot of efforts to educate them and made them aware of this site and its efforts. My wallet and heart was always open for immigrationvoice.org . But after Mumbai attacks and this link, I can see the hatred towards my community. Ive received a lot of passionate (and angry) e-mails in response to my article (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/19/business/economy/19grads.html) today on the employment fate of recent college graduates. While the messages from young people almost uniformly expressed frustration at the job market theyd been thrust into, some of the e-mails from older readers argued that todays college graduates were having trouble finding jobs because they hadnt worked hard enough. For example, a reader named Norman Berger asks why graduates wonder why they prove worthless to a potential employer when they follow this approach: Take soft subjects, be lulled into complacency by grade inflation, have teachers who are tenured and dont care how rigorously you think, start partying on Wednesdays, take 3-4 courses per semester/quarter and spend 5-6 years to graduate, study six hours per week (at best), believe in all of the liberal causes which produce soft qualative rather than quantative thinking, learn to hate the capitalistic system, dont care when you get out of school that youll still be living at home, etc As weve written before, todays college students do indeed spend less time studying (http://papers.nber.org/papers/w15954), and get higher grades, than their counterparts from a generation ago did. And most young graduates are leaning heavily on their family for financial support. More than one in five are living with their parents or other relatives, and many are getting help from family members for other expenses, as shown in the chart below.
