COMMENTARY on Pride: It's the little things that matter

Pride weekend is about celebrating who we are in a big way. The parade and festival make up the biggest civic event in the City of San Diego.

The parties are more numerous and bigger than at any time of the year. Celebrities entertain us and politicians pass resolutions. The floats and the crowds are bigger. Heck, even the bouffant hairdos are bigger.

We use this occasion to celebrate the big victories we have achieved throughout the year. And this year the victories are substantial. New York’s embrace of marriage equality has given us all hope that soon couples throughout the nation will receive official recognition for their love and commitment. The participation of a contingent of actively serving members of the military in the Pride Parade is a testament to the fact that the hated “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is in its death throes. The Obama administration has stopped defending the indefensible Defense of Marriage Act. The state legislature has voted to include LGBT history and accomplishments in our state’s schoolbooks [Gov. Jerry Brown signed it into law on Thursday, July 14] and the San Diego Unified School District has taken a strong stand against the bullying and harassment of LGBT students. Equality grows bigger on the horizon every day.

But Pride is only one weekend. The rest of the year we live ordinary lives. We go to work, pay our bills, care for our loved ones and raise our kids. There are no parades or proclamations to mark these daily achievements, but they, too, are the essence of who we are.

Throughout this past year, there has also been a steady stream of seemingly small accomplishments that moved us toward equality in ways that are often almost invisible. They, too, are worthy of celebration. Here are just a few:

• A federal court ruled in the California marriage case that a gay judge could preside fairly over a case involving LGBT rights. This is a key win in that particular case, but it also ensures that the increasing number of LGBT judges on the bench can do their jobs without being attacked for who they are.

• New Medicaid guidelines will protect same sex partners from poverty and homelessness by allowing them to keep their homes and other assets, even though one partner has applied for institutional care. This will prevent situations like a recent one in California, where an elderly couple was separated and their possessions sold off due to unequal treatment of same sex couples under Medicaid.

The San Diego City Council will consider an increase in the Linkage Fee it charges on commercial, industrial and retail construction projects in San Diego.  The fee is charged on a square foot basis and can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the size of the project.  It is charged to new and existing businesses that seek to improve or expand operations in the City of San Diego. Those forced to pay the fee include retail, office,  manufacturing, R & D and medical facilities.

The business community compares the fee to a Jobs Tax because it is assessed on companies that are expanding to create jobs.  The City of San Diego is the only city in the region to charge the fee.

The BIA strongly opposes the fee increase and will testify today along with nearly 50 other companies in opposition.

The hearing begins at 2:00 p.m. at San Diego City Hall.
