How will you celebrate the Fourth?

Some like the tolling of church bells, the parades, or simply a day off from work and an excuse to sleep in late.

There is an amazing breadth of events to attend, foods to eat and things to see and do in this region during the long Independence Day celebration that stretches from July 2 through July 10.

There are independence parades that are extravaganzas and those which are humble but patriotic community displays. There is even the water-borne parade - the Sassafras Boat Parade in Georgetown, Md., at 5 p.m. on July Fourth.

But for many Americans, Independence Day is not complete without the spectacle of fireworks - and there will be plenty to see. And, some love the excuse to get out on the water - any way they can - to watch the fireworks fly by overhead.

If you are on a boat, the sky shows will be terrific whether you are partying at anchor with friends or aboard one of this area's fun commercial cruise ships. You can make it a long weekend, with fireworks beginning on July 2, continuing on the 3rd, exploding on Monday (the Fourth of July) and extending into next weekend.

For those of you heading to the fireworks on the earth, sunset is at 8:36 p.m. Be sure to have taken your place before darkness begins a few minutes later.

And now for a look around the area:

Annapolis

Long before the parade begins in the city, there are several events around town, reminders of why we are Americans and what life was like in the colonial city of Maryland under British rule.

At 10 am on the Fourth of July, join a happy crowd on the terrace behind the house and William Paca Garden, 186 Prince George St., as they welcome 40 new citizens in the American melting pot. The Oath of Allegiance will be administered by an official with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Annapolis High School's NJROTC cadet color guard and the All Children's Chorus of Annapolis will participate in the event, which has become an annual Independence Day tradition.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Independence Day celebration goes on at Paca House with free tours of the home, craft-making, demonstrations of Revolutionary War camp life, musical performances at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and a public proclamation of the Declaration of Independence at 12:30 p.m.

From noon to 4 p.m., Hogshead at 43 Pinkney St. will be open with free admission. Visitors can interact with costumed historical interpreters who will speak and demonstrate aspects of colonial life.

Our Kids Count Launch Thunder Bay Community Kitchen : Thunder Bay ...

THUNDER BAY – The former RFDA building at 704 McKenzie Street has changed hands today. However the building will remain a site where families and food come together. In partnership with John Trevisanutto, Our Kids Count is launching the beginning of a community project that will establish a new kitchen for Thunder Bay.

The kitchen will be designed to help families prepare nutritious, affordable and healthy meals and will provide permanent, regular access, to a clean, secure, fully furnished kitchen facility, six days per week. Trained volunteer leaders will support participants in a friendly, ‘home-like’ facility with access to small appliances such as blenders, mixers, slow-cookers, and bread-machines.

“Food and cooking skills, nutrition and healthy eating form an important foundation for life. Many individuals may not have the facilities to cook, don’t get enough to eat, and often the food they do consume frequently has little nutritional value,” said Gladys Berringer, Executive Director of Our Kids Count. “Having opportunities to cook in a secure place will ensure that people that need it the most will be able to turn fresh ingredients into affordable and healthy meals.”

Children will also have a unique opportunity to learn basic cooking techniques through a peer program. High school students will be recruited to provide a positive role model to children wanting to learn how to make their own lunches or to prepare nutritious after-school snacks. This will be a ‘win-win’ situation for everyone involved as the role models will complete their required community hours and participants will gain valuable skills to help themselves and their families.

The kitchen will be officially named by the future participants and will be a multi-purpose space where people in the community can come together to share and learn valuable life skills and celebrate food,” states John Trevisanutto. “Food has the power to nourish us, the power to prevent disease, to bring families and communities together.”

Johnny De Bakker announced, “Every Christmas season, Thunder Bay wears its giant heart on its sleeve and gives generously to local charities.

A little less than two months ago, at the 8th annual Ischkinakker Shakker, nearly twenty-thousand dollers were raised for the Justice Ronald Lester Memorial Youth Foundation. Not to be outdone , across town, the 39th annual Stu Fest raised what has added to an estimated total of $300,000 over 39 years!
