Slideshow: RingSide Fish House prepares to open
Provided the “turf” on July 11, when it opened at its new location at 850 S.W. Broadway St. The “surf” side comes on Monday, July 18, when the Peterson family opens its new RingSide Fish House less than a block away, at 838 S.W. Park Ave. in Fox Tower.RingSide will serve only dinner through Thursday, then add lunch service on July 22.
There are lots of other upscale surf and turf options in downtown of course, but the one-two punch of a fish house opening on the heels of a steak house was too rich to ignore.
RingSide’s journey to Fox Tower began last year when the Peterson family, longtime operators of Portland’s two RingSide Steakhouse restaurants, leased the 8,300-square-foot former Harrison Restaurant space as a temporary home for its west side business during renovations. The temporary outpost was so successful the Petersons went ahead and inked a long-term lease with TMT Development Co. Inc. to open a permanent location.
Chef Johnny Nunn signed on to create a Northwest seafood concept.Ringside co-owner Craig Peterson, who grew up in the steak business, said he enjoys getting to know the fishing industry. "I am in my childhood in the fish and I am eager to learn," he said during a tour of the pre-opening on Tuesday.
The move is good for downtown and the business community. Fox Tower has struggled to keep a restaurant operator in the unusual second floor overlooking the Plaza area director. Harrison restaurant and later Tondero two failed the location and the space remained empty for several years before Ringside happened.
The new restaurant adds 90 jobs in downtown Portland.
