Friends build business on gingerbread
The product still surprises them.
When friends Kendall Cobb and Rhonda Dunn of Rocky Mount first thought of a reusable gingerbread house that could be sold at local craft fairs and used all year, they had their own ideas of what could be done with it. Despite initial success locally, it took several years to fine tune the plastic house they now hope to sell nationwide.
One of their favorite parts of developing the house was seeing the creativity it sparked, Cobb said. The women would hand friends a house, ask them to decorate it and wait excitedly to see the results.
“They bring it back in several days and they have made it into something that we would never think about. We have had lots of different things, anywhere from the holidays — Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter, Halloween — to a birthday house to a church to a princess castle to a pirate house to a crab shack and beach cottage. It can be anything you can think of,” Cobb said.
Q: What services or products do you provide?
A: The Candy Cottage is a reusable, washable, no-baking-required gingerbread house for any season.
Q: Who are your leaders?
A: Rhonda Dunn, co-owner, and myself.
Q: How many people do you employ?
A: Just the two of us.
Q: When were you established?
A: October 2010.
Q: What’s your business philosophy?
A: Making memories sweet one season at a time and creating family traditions for holidays, birthdays and even Saturdays.
Q: What makes your business unique?
A: There is no reusable gingerbread house on the market. Most kits require assembly, and you throw them away when you are done.
Q: Why did you pick Rocky Mount as a place to do business?
A: That is where we both live and raise our families.
Q: How has your company grown since it started?
A: We have had several revisions of the product to improve the ease of decorating and the quality of the gingerbread house itself.
Q: What changes do you expect for your company in coming years?
A: We would like to see the house in lots of retail stores, and we have several exciting ideas of how we would like to expand the production in the future if it continues to be a success.
