KFDI News > Work to begin on new war memorials

A simulated dynamite blast in downtown Wichita Saturday morning served as the groundbreaking for two new monuments in Veterans Memorial Park.

About 200 veterans and community members gathered for the half-hour ceremony.

Work will begin right away on a memorial to local veterans of World War II. Ted Ayres, vice president and general counsel at Wichita State University, has served as chairman of the WWII Memorial, Inc., a non-profit group leading the fund raising effort for the memorial.

He said the memorial is greatly needed.

"There are a number of individual memorials to components in World War II (currently in the park)," Ayres said. "The Marines, medical corps, submariners, merchant marines; but nothing specifically for the group of veterans as a whole."

Another person who has believed for quite a while that the memorial was needed is Phil Blake, an 87-year-old veteran of World War II. He and other local veterans have been working for the past decade on getting a new memorial for the park.

"People, it's a shame to say, don't realize that Pearl Harbor started (the U.S. involvement in) World War II," Blake said after Saturday's ceremony. "They don't realize that the submariners memorial there - both of them - are World War II."

There are six other monuments to some veterans of World War II currently in the park as well. The new memorial will tie everything together, Blake said.

Organizers have offered the family members of veterans a chance to help fund the project by purchasing commemorative bricks. The bricks, available for $100, will bear the honored veteran's name, branch of service, theater of operation and dates served.

Blake said the effort, which started just recently, has already collected $16,000.

"Now that is gratifying," he said. "It feels like all those years of work and planning and scheming; they're going to happen now."

The hope is for the new memorial to be finished in time for a Dec. 7 dedication ceremony, which will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Ground was also broken Saturday for a memorial to the American Revolution. That monument is slated for completion in 2013. Long-term plans include an Operation Freedom memorial for veterans of Operation Desert Storm as well as the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
