Alderman teams with community organizations to be change agents for area youth

“We are in a crisis,” Ashanti Hamilton, 1st District Alderman, said. “We have record unemployment, record numbers of drop outs and terrifying literacy rates primarily among urban youth.”

Combined with incarceration rates, a bleak economy and struggling neighborhoods, Hamilton says change is no longer a choice, it’s a mandate.

The city is facing an unusually tough budget year and with a new ordinance on the books that asks for more success from local Community Development Block Grant funded agencies, change is in the air.

“The reality is we have a number of organizations out there trying to do the work, but we are going to have less and less money to fund them and more and more need for their services. We have to strategize a more direct path to solutions,” Alderman Hamilton said.

That’s why he’s partnering with a group of community organizers and stakeholders who are ready to collaborate. Be the Change is the brain child of the City of Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative, Urban Underground, Inc., Running Rebels Community Organization, Milwaukee County UW Extension, Milwaukee Health Department, Center for Youth Engagement and Public Allies Emerging Black Male Leadership Project. The agencies are combining resources and experience to develop a curriculum to be delivered through the Milwaukee Public Schools.

The campaign begins as a pilot in the summer. Students who were in high school for 2010-2011 will be identified to participate in the literacy, leadership and life-skills instruction weekly at the Washington High School and Benson High School campuses.

When the summer pilot finishes, successful participants will receive ongoing support and mentoring from trained participants placed in the schools. The Running Rebels Violence Free Zone initiative is providing the outreach to help ensure that academic performance, appropriate attendance numbers and behavioral outcomes are being met by the students.

“We have so many people in the community who work with youth, but each through a different vehicle. This program is providing the structure and support to maximize the talents of mentors and their efforts,” Alderman Hamilton said. “We’re not reinventing the wheel; we are trying to create a pothole-free path that embraces a more wrap-around model.”

If the pilot and year-round mentoring meets its goals, the program is charting an expansion for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond.
