The saying 'April showers bring spring flowers' proved itself as the blossoms of flowers covered many hillside and Saskatoon bushes etc. Now a good rainfall is needed and a good thunderstorm to make things grow.

The recent frost nipped potato plants and the alfalfa froze pretty good. It is a great year for germination, as it doesn't take long for seeds to grow. The cutworms are busy on the peas that came up others need a rain to come up.

Crops look good, rich in colour except the early canola froze badly.

Warren Marfleet passed away at the age of 74 years on May 23, 2011. Warren was the oldest son of Jack and Grace Marfleet and the family resided in the Battleview area. Warren married Arlene (Buster and Elsie Newman's daughter) and in 1974 began farming in the Preston area. They had two girls Carrie and Cindy. The family attended school there and were active in 4-H and the Preston Community Centre. They resided for 30 years in the community and Warren built many fine homes in and around the area. He worked for seven years for Caron and Calvert Construction and 17 years for Pettigrew Construction. He was also a feeder bus driver and Arlene worked at the Vermilion Post Office for many years.

Retiring to Vermilion Warren still continued carpentry making many a furniture pieces to perfection. Warren was generous in donating to the silent auction for Buffalo Coulee and Auburndale Hall. Many a home has Warren's items of carpentry from end tables, coffee tables, toy boxes, birdhouses and scroll saw items. He enjoyed curling, playing cards and gopher shooting was a springtime hobby. Warren and Arlene recently celebrated their 50 anniversary with family and friends. He had a neat smile, quiet in nature and enjoyed a joke or two. He will be missed by his wife Arlene, children Carrie (Brian) Barlow and granddaughter Kelli; daughter Cindy (Brian) Link and grandsons Jace and Logan. Condolences also to the Newman and Marfleet family from the district.

Mark Saturday, June 18 on your calendar for the seventh anniversary celebration of the Back Forty on Hwy. 619 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lots of garage sale items, mini jamboree, free coffee and donuts, a show and shine car show and bike rally will all be part of the day. All the proceeds go to Bellevue Bible Camp and Vermilion Girl Guides.

On Sunday, June 12 the Auburndale Hall will hold its annual old time picnic (2 p.m.) with races, horseshoes, ladder golf, silent auction and pie tasting contest around 3:30 p.m. Coffee is only .50¢ a cup all day. Supper will be at 5:30 p.m. One of the pie judges is Richard Van Ee councilor for Division 3. Rain or shine come and enjoy the day. All proceeds go for the year's expenses.
