Shields and Simon straight into Group side
The Forster-Tuncurry duo of Cory Shields and Chris Simon will be slotted straight into the starting 13 for Group Three in tomorrow’s Country Championship semi-final against Group 19 at Scone.Both were included in the squad this week following injuries to Wauchope prop Adam McMurray and Forster-Tuncurry centre Brayden Wynter. Shields was initially named on the bench with Simon at five-eighth.
However group coach Dave Henry revealed yesterday that he wants to keep as close to the side that ran on in the opening round against Group Two as possible.
That means Justin Laurie will start at five-eighth with Chris Trembath in the second row. Shields will take McMurray’s place in the front row while Simon will be in the centres for Wynter. Wauchope’s Beau Kettle has been named in the centres but will be on the bench, where he’ll play either in the outside backs or in the back row.
Henry has every confidence in Shields and Simon.
“Chris Simon has played many times at this level and he’s never let Group Three down,’’ he said.
“And he’s one of those footballers who can play anywhere. That’s invaluable in these type of games.
“Cory plays with a lot of energy - he enjoys the challenge and he enjoys the collision. I like that in a footy player. I think he’ll be outstanding.’’
Port City’s Mitch Fowler will be the first interchange forward used if injury doesn’t intervene.
Port second rower Daniel Dumas - one of Group Three’s best in the win over Group Two - hasn’t played since after injuring his ankle in that match.
“I haven’t spoken to Daniel since but I expect he’ll be right. Mitch Fowler had stitches in a thumb, but they were taken out earlier this week and there’s no doubt over him,’’ Henry said.
Despite this week’s torrential rain the side was due to train at Wauchope last night. Henry said he’s expecting the Scone field to be at best soft tomorrow.
“That’s probably not ideal, we would have preferred a dry track, but it will be the same for both teams,’’ Henry said.
“I don’t think it will make much difference to the way we approach the game.’’
Henry understands that like Group Three, Group 19 has made a couple of forced changes to the side that downed Group Four a fortnight ago but he expects they’ll field a formidable side.
“This is the second year they’ve made the final four,’’ he said.
