After 5 decades, ABM becomes INNOVEX

Advanced Business Machines, a 50-year-old copier, printer, office supplier and modern-technology manufacturer in Lincoln, has rebranded the company as INNOVEX, which stands for innovating office excellence. The company changed its signs last week and plans an open house at its 16,000-square-foot facility on Thursday, June 23.

“Our brand name hadn’t kept pace with the products and services we provide for today’s technology-driven workplace,” said Peter Parisi, INNOVEX president. “Far beyond sophisticated multifunction devices and tech support, we also provide expert information-technology services.”

Parisi, the owner, acquired Advanced Business Machines in 2001.

Lardaro: R.I. recovery losing steam

Rhode Island’s shallow recovery has clearly lost some of its momentum, according to an economic index compiled by University of Rhode Island Prof. Leonard Lardaro.

“Rhode Island began the second quarter in much the same way it ended the first: continued slowing in the rate of economic growth,” Lardaro said.

The Current Conditions Index, released Monday, registered 58 in April, the same level as in March and down from 67 in February and January. The index was 83 in December. An index reading of 50 is considered neutral. Anything above indicates an expanding economy; anything below is a contracting economy.

Lardaro said the headwinds affecting the economy are both cyclical, most notably the adverse effects of rising food and energy prices, and structural, such as balancing the state budget and paying down a huge unfunded-pension liability.

“All of this will prove to be quite a challenge for Rhode Island, as the need to deal with the longer term, something seldom done here, takes on ever-increasing urgency,” he said.

Financing set for Tockwotton Home move

Financing has been completed for the $53.2-million expansion and relocation of Tockwotton Home from Providence to 12 acres along the East Providence waterfront.

The nursing home contributed $10.5 million of owner equity to the project. Some equity was raised from private donors, including the Champlin Foundations. About $42 million was raised through a tax-exempt bond offering by the state Health and Educational Building Corporation.

Art for a Cause: Japanese Relief Art Show Tonight in Lincoln Park ...

Artist creators Andy Evans and Carla Wyzgala teamed up with friends and musicians Chris Alvarez (of Gypsyblood) and Frank Ligety (of House of Normandie) to host a one-day event to showcase local Chicago artists and collect donations to send to the American Red Cross Japanese Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund.  The general theme of the night is meant to pay homage to Japanese culture, including recent tragic events, which inspired the creative minds taking part. Along with the Artwork on display, the night will include a live DJ, live photography booth, video entertainment, drinks and light snacks. “More than anything, we wanted to raise money to help out the people and communities of Japan.  Throwing a gallery event with art and music seemed the most logical way for us to raise money for the cause.  And the theme came to be because collectively we’re all admirers of Japan, it’s people and its export of art and culture.” (Carla Wyzgala) Wyzgala and Evans hope to put on at least one more art and music show at the same venue at some point this summer. Future events aside, the two hope the public takes advantage of the opportunity to both do good and expand their cultural palette by attending this event. “We hope we can all keep inspiring each other to do great things for our world through the creative process.”
