Halo Shooting Games In The Internet

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to support Kinect motion control

We open with Modern Warfare 3 - the underwater scene teased in the trailers we've already seen. It looks, admittedly, excellent. The infiltrating team weave their way through Russian mines, pausing as a submarine goes overhead. The player - "Frost" - plants a mine on the submarine, which rises, allowing the team to the tail and fight their way in through the top hatch, where a tightly scripted demo jumps to the team blowing down a door to the control room of the sub. The explosion seemingly grants us a few seconds of slow-mo bullet time, allowing the commandos to take out the resistance on the sub before hijacking its missiles, and presumably setting them to launch directly on Moscow or something. Cut to a boat chase and some explosions. It's Modern Warfare . It's James Bond. You love it, and if you don't it doesn't matter because millions will buy it. Fade out to Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward and Glen Scofield of Sledgehammer Games on the stage, where Glen says that Modern Warfare 3 is "the biggest Call of Duty ever". Don Matrick from Microsoft appears, to inform us that Call of Duty shows us what "the world's greatest storytellers" can do. There is a bit of scoffing from the audience, just picked up by the live stream microphones. Daniel Neuburger and Darrel Gallagher from Crystal Dynamics show up, to give us Tomb Raider on the 360. 21-year old Lara Croft is upside down, tied up by her legs in a darkened cavern of some sort - breaking free only to plunge into the ground and impale herself on some metal. She struggles up, onwards and out of the caves, seeing others held captive or crucified, and clutching her injured side awkwardly as she runs. It becomes clear that there are enemies moving against her and her former crew - presumably people already stranded on the island and gone insane. Lara can use her "survival instinct" to highlight objects in the world, and our demonstrators use this to solve some admittedly mad puzzles and get out to open sky again. We also see some quicktime events when the enemies grab her from behind, trying to drag her back into the caves. Launch date put at fall 2012. Speaking of EA, Bioware co-founder Ray Muzyka is now on stage, and he's talking Mass Effect 3 . There's "never been a better time to jump in" says Ray, leading nicely into the fact that Mass Effect 3 will support Kinect through voice recognition (but not gesturing).

Now, it's time for a Halo game announcement - is it Halo 4? No, it isn't. It is in fact Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and it's promising the original Halo experience, only remade and remastered. Classic multiplayer maps "enhance and updated",

We all knew it was coming, eventually, though I'ma little surprised that we'd be seeing two Halo games announced in the same event. I predicted the Anniversary game (like shooting ducks in a barrel), but I honestly didn't think we'd see the first

Why the game industry is pwning it all

The Microsoft press event, packed with journalists and industry types, kicks off with a preview of the new Call of Duty game and ends with a sneak peak at the new Halo game. In between, the vast majority of new titles announced here will be sequels,

Hell, it doesn't have to be a first-person Halo game, it could even be something set in the Halo universe or something as a side story. I don't think we are through with Halo, and this would be a golden opportunity to show us something we haven't seen

Interview: Lori Zawada, Sr. Environmental Artist at Certain ...

Lori Zawada is one of the Sr. Environment Artists on staff at Certain Affinity.  Certain Affinity is a top console game developer in Austin, TX with a strong 5-year history of working major publisher credits and projects. Their studio is well-known for contributing world-class design on Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo 2 and 3 and Left 4 Dead. Extensive design work from them on Halo Reach was recently announced.

Geek Woman: Looking at your resume is like reading  ”How to Succeed in Video Games”, maybe you should write a book about your career?

Lori Zawada: Haha, the closest I came to writing a book was trying to write and illustrate a children’s book. It made my friends’ little girl cry so I gave up on that.

Have you ever encountered, or witnessed any sexism and judgement from men in the industry that you can talk about?

Actually not at all. In fact I find that men are very receptive to woman in the industry. I’ve never felt “unwanted”. In my personal opinion the reason there are so few women in the industry isn’t become of some invisible wall but because there aren’t enough girls thinking of joining. When I started over 10 years ago it was very rare for women to be actively working on games. Looking around the office right now there’s 4 of us (actually in production). We’re by no means taking over but it’s getting better. The more mainstream games become the easier it’ll be for woman to be like “oh, I guess I do like games, that’s cool”. In addition to that it’s easier to find information on college’s specializing in games and tutorials on the internet to help kickstart a career in games.

Now all this being said the atmosphere tends to be pretty laid back and there tends to be a good amount of jokes and “college” humor. If you don’t mind that then that might make things easier. If you’re very sensitive to that in general then I’m guessing the average gamer group will know their limits and adjust their attitudes accordingly.

Going back as far as the PS 2 your worked on Summoner 2. That game flew too far under the radar at the time. It had two strong female characters. What was it like working your way up through the ranks on that game?

This game was a trial by fire for me. I dabbled in 3d and had a few art pieces to show when I was hired but there wasn’t really a lot of “game knowledge” in my portfolio. Volition understood this and most everything was taught on the job. Luckily I picked up on things quickly.
