Flood 2011 Fact Sheet as of 1 p.m. June 3, 2011

The NDNG’s flood support in the Bismarck-Mandan area consists of sandbagging operations, traffic control points, resource control points, Civil Military Assistance Teams (CMATs), heavy equipment operation, sandbag filling and dike construction. Plans are being made to begin patrolling the levee systems in the near future. In Minot, the NDNG’s missions include patrolling 21 miles of levees from Minot to Burlington, staffing traffic control points and providing quick reaction force teams for any needed response. Presence patrols are moving through evacuated areas to ensure residents need not worry about theft or vandalism while they’re away from home. The Guard has helicopters and high-wheeled vehicles ready on standby for needed response. The N.D. National Guard (NDNG), as well as the N.D. Department of Emergency Services (NDDES), the Governor’s Office and other state agencies, has prepared for flood response. Governor Dalrymple has called up Soldiers and Airmen to serve on State Active Duty in to support severe summer flood operations in Ward County/Minot, Morton County/Mandan and Burleigh County/Bismarck. • The Guard has eight Civil Military Assistance Teams (CMATs) working with volunteers in the Bismarck and Mandan areas to assist with sandbag construction outside of protected areas. They will be in Captain’s Landing, Marina Bay, Fox Island, Southport and possibly other areas today staging sandbags, finishing sandbag levees, and placing poly sheeting on levees. • Sandbag production operations halted temporarily overnight June 2-3 because of a severe thunderstorm warning and lack of volunteers, but is up and running again. Volunteers and prisoners have taken the lead in filling sandbags, while the Guard is transitioning more to supervision and filling sandbag machine hoppers with heavy equipment. Reports indicate about 500,000 more sandbags are needed by Sunday. The Guard is managing or supporting three sandbag operation sites in Bismarck and one in Mandan today. • Among the resources the NDNG has used in the flood fight are Trap Bags, accordion-like heavy-duty bags filled with sand. The manufacturer said that NDNG members set a record in how quickly the bags could be deployed while they were working in the Bismarck-Mandan area yesterday; Guardsmen placed and filled 180 feet worth of Trap Bag flood protection per hour. • JTF-W is continuing sandbag production operations to support the cities of Bismarck and Mandan.
