Aliens eat LA and Owen Wilson gets a 'Hall Pass'

Doing my best to get this week's new DVD release rundown out in a timely manner. I know that on a rare beautiful sunny Bay Area day the last thing you want to do is stay inside and watch videos, but remember my friends, the fog will return! Armed with this knowledge you'll be prepared to entertain yourselves with some new flicks when the summer cold descends again.

I'll start with comedy and 'Hall Pass' , the new film from the Farrelly Brothers ('There's Something About Mary'). Owen Wilson ('Wedding Crashers') and Jason Sudeikis (SNL, '30 Rock') star as 30 something married men longing for the days of carefree bachelorhood. Their wives, Jenna Fischer ('The Office') and Christina Applegate ('Married With Children'), are fed up with their husbands staring at the ass of every woman who walks past them and decide to offer them a "Hall Pass" - one week off from marriage. The two men and their jealous gang of married pals plan for a week of boozing, womanizing and slovenliness, but soon discover that they don't have the stamina for drinking anymore and they may have overestimated their allure with the ladies. Their wives, however, discover that they enjoy singledom more than they anticipated.

This film is like many other Farrelly Brothers movies - when you hear the plot you think it's going to be horribly offensive, but then it ends up being kind of innocent and sweet. For evidence, see 'Stuck on You' about conjoined twins or 'Shallow Hal' with Gwyneth Paltrow in a fat suit. This film isn't quite as good as either of those and the humor is a little less broad than usual, but it's still a pretty enjoyable film. I watched it on the plane and was happily entertained.

The other comedy of the day is Part Three of the 'Big Momma' trilogy, 'Big Mommas Like Father, Like Son' . Martin Lawrence is back in his role as an FBI agent deep undercover as a large Southern grandma who seems to have trouble fighting off the male suitors despite her deep unpleasantness. Expect lots of size and cross-dressing jokes.

Only two dramas today. The first is 'Monogamy' - the new film from Oscar-nominated documentarian Dana Adam Shapiro ('Murderball'). It's about a wedding photographer (Chris Messina, 'Julie & Julia') who moonlights taking voyeuristic photos of clients in compromising positions. Trouble starts when he falls for a particularly attractive client (Meital Dohan, 'Weeds') and begins to question his long-time relationship with his musician fiancee (Rashida Jones, 'Parks & Rec'). The write-ups compare it to 'Sex, Lies & Videotape' - as an examination of the sex lives and relationships of 30-somethings in the 00's.

Scandal-plagued New York Congressman ANTHONY WEINER announced his intention to resign today after The NATIONAL ENQUIRER published a shocking cover photo of him wearing women’s lingerie!

Caught strutting his stuff in a bra and women’s hose, the world exclusive photo is seen in the upper right –hand corner of the new print edition of The Enquirer, which began hitting newsstands yesterday.

Within hours of publication, Weiner’s office announced he would speak to reporters at 2 P.M. today.

Multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press, said the 46-year-old married lawmaker – who has a baby on the way — had made the decision to give up his House seat and resign. The Enquirer photo – depicting Weiner in women’s undergarments and another pic of him in skintight swim briefs – was snapped by a college pal in 1982, when the then 18-year-old Weiner was enrolled in the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

The scandal erupted on May 28 when a conservative website posted a lewd photo of an underwear-clad crotch and said it had been sent from Weiner’s Twitter account to a Seattle woman.

After initially lying and saying his account had been hacked, Weiner finally acknowledged that he had engaged in several “sexting” relationships with women on the Internet. The Democratic politician also confirmed exchanging Twitter messages with a 17-year-old girl from Delaware, but police said nothing inappropriate appeared in their texts.

Weiner, who had refused to resign amid an ethics investigation, had recently entered a treatment facility to deal with his “sex addiction.
