Mayors from across state coming to area

LANCASTER --Next week, more than 100 mayors from across the state will visit Fairfield County to participate in the annual Mayors' Association of Ohio conference.

"Everyone has had a 'can do' attitude about (this)," said Baltimore Mayor Robert Kalish. "Lancaster, the Fairfield County Visitor and Convention Bureau and local businesses have been really helpful in getting the convention together."

Kalish is the president of the Mayors' Association this year. In the spring of 2010, he and Lancaster Mayor Dave Smith presented their plan for the conference to a joint committee of the Ohio Municipal League and the Mayors' Association.

The conference includes short courses on municipal-related issues, education and on common problems facing mayors and municipalities across the state.

The conference will feature addresses by Secretary of State Jon Husted and Ohio Auditor Dave Yost and breakout sessions dealing with topics that affect all communities, including property codes and enforcement, budget issues, collective bargaining, shared services and economic development.

Baltimore police Chief Michael Tussey will conduct a workshop on the role of a village police chief, and Orman Hall, director of the Ohio Department of Alcohol & Drug Addiction Services, will talk about the prescription drug abuse problem in the state.

Kalish said more than 100 mayors are saying they plan to attend.

Greg Eyerman, executive director of the Fairfield County Visitors and Convention Bureau, said planning for the event has been going on for about two years.

"We have prepared packets of information for the visitors, and we hope they will spend money here," Eyerman said. "The will need hotel rooms, food, and may have some time to shop and visit our museums."

Eyerman said a conference like this helps show what is available to people in the Lancaster area.

"You get a word-of-mouth value out of this," Eyerman said. "If they like it here, they may go back to their own communities and talk about what is available here."

With all the villages in Ohio within driving distance of Fairfield County, attendees might come back or encourage others to visit the county.

"We are very excited that they are coming here," Eyerman said. "During the conference, we will be checking in with hotels and conference organizers to make sure everything is going smoothly. We just want to make sure we put our best face forward and that they enjoy their time here.
