Ruth Taber: Let's all drink to these gadgets
For a glass of wine with dinner, I've always delegated cork pulling chores to my husband. I excel at breaking corks and often have problems removing corkscrews from bottles. Not any more.
At the Chicago International Home and Housewares Show last March, several vendors were demonstrating battery operated cork pullers. Returning home, I tested two battery-operated wine openers. Wish you all could see the big smile on my face when I effortlessly removed corks from two bottles.
Metrokane, makers of the manual "Rabbit" corkscrew, had a big display of its newest baby -- an Electric Rabbit. This sleek looking gadget has an electronic screen that shows how many pulls you have left before recharging is necessary. Sitting firmly on top of the bottle, it works well with all types of corks, even the newer plastic ones. Push the bottom of the button and the cork comes out of the bottle. Push the top of the button and the Rabbit releases the cork. The Electric Rabbit comes with a charger, (approximately 30 pulls on one charge) and foil cutter. A boon for those with hand/wrist problems, (or challenged wine bottle cork pullers like me), this gadget makes an impressive gift. Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is $49.99; available at Macy's and amazon.com.
I also tested the Oster Electric (4207) Wine Opener and was even more delighted. Considerably less expensive, the Oster operates similarly; button pushing pulls and releases the cork. The operation takes less than 10 seconds and you're ready to pour. It also opens about 30 bottles on one charge. Two features I especially liked about the Oster (in addition to its low price): the opener stays in its charging stand when not in use and the foil cutter, attached to the opener doesn't get lost. Lightweight and easy to grip, the MSRP is $20. I found it online at walmart.com for $15.54; at this price you can buy one for yourself and one for a friend/relative!
Serious wine drinkers decant their red wines, allowing them to breathe before sipping. The breathing/waiting time enhances flavor and aroma. Now casual wine drinkers can enjoy a breathing shortcut -- appealing to both palate and pocket -- with the inexpensive Bordeaux Wine Aerator. Insert the spiral base of this bell-shaped glass aerator into an open bottle of red wine and pour. The new item is being offered at a special introductory price to El Paso Times readers for $10 plus postage. This can only be purchased online at winebreathes.com/aeratorelpaso.
