How do I wire electric receptacles together in a series ...
I understand where each of the 3 wires connects to the receptacle, but I want to have 4 outlets on the breaker, Do I just add the wire for the next outlet under the same screw for each of the 3 wires? Meaning that each outlet is going to have 2 wires under each ground screw, each hot and each neutral? With the exception of the last receptacle in the series?
Numnuts.
You do NOT wire electrical outlets together in series. I don’t think you should be doing this. This is not going to work like a normal set of outlets. You would have to have something plugged into each one, and the more things you had plugged in the dimmer they would get.
But, if you want to do something like this, here’s what you do:
If you are using 2-conductor cable there will be three wires: black, white, and a bare copper wire (the ground).
You will have one cable coming into each electrical box, and one cable going out, except for the last one in the series which will only have one cable going into it.
To the first outlet and all up to the last one, connect the black wire coming in to one side of the outlet, and the black wire going out to the other side. Splice the white wires together using a wire nut. Connect both bare copper ground wires to the green grounding screw in the electrical box. At the last outlet, connect the black wire to the hot side of the outlet (its the screws on one side that look a little golden), and connect the white wite to the other side (the screws look silver). Connect the single ground wire to the green grounding screw. That’s it.
Good luck for whatever nonsense it is you are trying to do.
NUMNUTS: You do not want to use standard outlets with a 40Amp breaker. They are usually rated for 15 Amps.
Now if what you want to do is to wire them like any normal person, do this:
Each box will have two cables, one going in and one going out to the next outlet in the set. In each box, connect the black wire to the hot side of the outlet (golden screws), the white wire to the silver screws on the other side, and the ground wires to the green grounding screw.
That’s it.
Blow yourself up.
1st off what the hell r u going to need an amp for eack outlet!!!!!?????? you need a 20 amp at most. and you can wire then in series but its not good but you can do it. well its ok you can do this, the black goes to the gold side and white goes to the sliver side then the copper goes to the green screw. thats about it but if you dont want them in series then make a tail with scrap and just tie the colors that match together and then leave the tail long enough and put it on the screws listed above. so dont listen to that JACKASS that wrote first b/c he doesnt know shit have fun….
