Wimbledon 2011: Serena Williams rises again to breathe life into the women's game
This Jehovah’s Witness descends on Wimbledon in two biblical guises. Not only is she the saviour of a tournament that would, without her and Venus, induce indifference on a level unrecorded since Audley Harrison’s last pronouncement that he will be fighting on, she is also cast as Lazarus, having risen from the nearly dead after surgery in March to remove potentially lethal blood clots from both lungs.
For that medical emergency, broken glass was responsible. It is not known who smashed the drinking vessel on which Serena stepped in a Munich restaurant last July, though the paucity of Bavarian first-class cricket offers Matt Prior a handy alibi. But it was from an second operation on her wounded foot that Serena developed the pulmonary embolism.
With the ladies, there is none any more. Of the Belgo-American quartet which dominated the last decade, Justine Henin has retired for a second and possibly final time, Wimbledon absentee Kim Clijsters is poised to do the same, and both Williams sisters are close to the end.
Their successors at the top of the world rankings are solid, workmanlike and spectacularly uninspiring. Delightful as it was to watch Li Na do the trophy engraver a favour by becoming the first Chinese major winner, she is no more a titan than Francesca Schiavone, the defending champion she beat in the recent French Open. As for Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki’s reign as world No1 — in succession to such giants as Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic — this confirms that there are lies, damned lies and women’s tennis rankings.
Much of the blame for the current nadir goes to the Soviet Union’s demise for encouraging the former USSR and its Warsaw Pact satellites to churn out a phalanx of anonymous replicas. Vera Zvonareva babushka would need luck to pick her out at an identity parade, and you wouldn’t recognise Victoria Azarenka if she fell on you screaming “I am Victoria Azarenka”. The same cannot be said for Maria Sharapova, finally back to something close to her attritional peak but hard to worship for all her beauty. Aphrodite was also a looker, and Paris would have given his apple to the late Gwyneth Dunwoody over her had the goddess of love squealed like a stuck pig on helium.
But forget Aphrodite, and give thanks for Venus and Serena.
