Much of the blame for the current nadir goes to the Soviet Union’s demise for encouraging the former USSR and its Warsaw Pact satellites to churn out a phalanx of anonymous replicas. Vera Zvonareva babushka would need luck to pick her out at an identity parade, and you wouldn’t recognise Victoria Azarenka if she fell on you screaming “I am Victoria Azarenka”. The same cannot be said for Maria Sharapova, finally back to something close to her attritional peak but hard to worship for all her beauty. Aphrodite was also a looker, and Paris would have given his apple to the late Gwyneth Dunwoody over her had the goddess of love squealed like a stuck pig on helium.

But forget Aphrodite, and give thanks for Venus and Serena.
