Black Rock's back
Through the windshield of a car going 30 mph, Amherst Street in Buffalo doesn't look like much.
This well-worn thoroughfare -- lined with weathered storefronts and simple houses built during the neighborhood's industrial heyday -- serves for many Buffalonians as an unremarkable driveway linking the Scajaquada Expressway to a Wegmans supermarket.
But for a pedestrian ambling along the half-mile mile stretch between Elmwood Avenue and Grant Street, the seemingly sleepy neighborhood will begin to offer up its secrets.
And for those who peek their heads into the street's growing collection of businesses and bars, its art galleries and restaurants, an entirely different picture emerges:
Black Rock, the historic Buffalo neighborhood whose sense of community has remained strong even as its storefronts emptied and its property values stagnated, is showing new signs of life.
According to neighborhood business owners and habitues of the street's growing cultural scene, Black Rock is the next logical frontier among the city's walkable neighborhoods -- and ground zero for a burgeoning experiment in mixed-use urban development.
Signs of Black Rock's resurgence are apparent everywhere.
Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the Black Rock Kitchen and Bar, a new restaurant being launched by local historian, entrepreneur and Buffalo booster Mark Goldman and his son, Charlie Goldman. They plan to open the restaurant for business by the end of June. West of Grant Street, the popular Sportsmen's Tavern, a bar and music venue, is completing a major renovation, adding a second floor of seating to the space and greatly expanding its capacity for concerts. Art exhibitions are in heavy rotation on a one-block stretch of Amherst Street that includes three galleries: 464, run by photographer and curator Marcus Wise in a former appliance store soon to be expanded to include studios; Artsphere, a gallery and studio launched in 2003 by Black Rock art scene pioneer Doreen DeBoth; and Tempest Air, an airbrush studio launched last October by artist Jenn Mayberry. Artists, musicians and neighborhood folks gather nightly in Rohall's Corner, a cozy, Eastern European-themed bar that opened its doors earlier this year on the corner of Amherst and Reservation streets, and Casey's, a long-established watering hole and restaurant that wears its no-nonsense Buffalo-bred attitude with pride.Village At Black Rock - News

Joshua Tree National Park Seeks Public Input on Rehabilitation of the Black Rock Campground for Erosion and Drainage Control Public input is being sought regarding the National Park Service’s (NPS) proposed plan to conduct drainage and erosion control improvements, along with redesign of the road and campground layout at the Black Rock Campground.
Joshua Tree National Park will be hosting a public meeting on June 28, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at the Black Rock Campground Visitor Center Auditorium to inform the public about proposed improvements to the campground. This will also be a time for the public to share their ideas and recommendations. Black Rock Campground is located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Road, Yucca Valley California 92284, five miles south of Highway 62 in Yucca Valley via Joshua Lane.
The campground is sited on 80 acres in the northwest corner of Joshua Tree National Park about 1 mile south of the town of Yucca Valley. The existing campground facilities include a visitor center, comfort stations, gravel and asphalt roads, and car and recreational vehicle campsites. The large Black Rock Canyon watershed outside of the boundaries of the campground currently conveys storm runoff through portions of the campground in an unpredictable manner, resulting in localized erosion and flooding. The campground, acquired by the Park Service in 1976 from a commercial operator, was not designed to adequately convey drainage away from campground facilities. Campground roads are currently aligned so that storm water runs directly down the roads with the potential for damaging campground facilities, natural resources, and adjacent landowner property. Degraded roads and camping areas also have contributed to increased storm runoff, erosion, and sedimentation.
To address these issues, the park is proposing several changes to the campground including drainage improvements to divert storm water runoff away from campground roads and nearby residential properties into appropriate natural drainage channels. Campground roads would be realigned across the topographic contour to prevent conveyance of storm water runoff and reduce the potential for erosion. The proposed realignment of the campground road network would improve accessibility for vehicles, pedestrians, and horse riders, and it would enhance overall circulation. Improvement of campsite layout with better privacy would also be a component of the proposed rehabilitation work. The proposed project does not include improvements to the campground entrance road. This will be addressed in a future project.
